Self-hosting

Run your own cloud

For anyone hosting their own files with Nextcloud: on a home server, a NAS or a rented VPS. These are the guides that go with our YouTube videos, each one tested on a real install. If Nextcloud feels like more than you need, OpenCloud is the leaner alternative, and the comparison below covers when it makes sense.

Getting started

What Nextcloud gives you on a fresh install, and whether the leaner OpenCloud suits you better.

Setup and apps

Turning a bare install into something you and your family will actually use.

Fixes and maintenance

The errors everyone hits, and the upkeep that keeps your data safe.

Self-host or use an encrypted service?

Self-hosting gives you full control, and with it the updates, the backups and the 2 a.m. fixes. If what you mainly want is files nobody else can read, a zero-knowledge provider gets you most of the way with none of the upkeep. Our zero-knowledge cloud storage data lists which providers encrypt so they cannot see your files, and the compare tool puts their plans and prices side by side.
